Atropine

A type of ‘Tropane Alkaloid’

Atropine is a highly toxic compound which occurs in Atropa belladonna, Datura stramonium, and other Solanaceae plants.

It has anticholinergic activity, causing blurred vision, suppressed salivation, vasodilation, excitement, and delirium, which is why it’s often found in ‘Witches Flying Ointments’.

It is used in anaesthesia and as an antidote in cases of poisoning caused by cholinesterase inhibitors, such as physostigmine and organophosphate insecticides.

THE LEATHAL DOSE IN HUMANS IS: 100 mg.
