Part 3 of the ‘Death topic request series’ from the FB group.
That title is a special one for @ChristopherEvans who I know is a big fan of my #FarmboyKaraoki on the ‘No Holds Barred Witchcraft’ podcast lol.
I know that writing fact files about spirits is a popular thing to do, but I'm not really one for just stating the facts. I prefer to be a little more personal and so here are a few little tidbits of info on a spirit I personally work with and also incorporate into the events we do for the ‘Thoth Witchcraft Shop.’ It also happens to be a spirit who has caused untold amounts of damage and problems for former clients (I think she likes to send idiots who piss her off to me to fix after she’s started eating them).
The spirit I'm of course talking about is Santa Muerte and the info here is hardly going to be extensive (you’ll have to wait for our ‘Thoth TV’ documentary for that.)
Santa Muerte or Santisima Muerte is considered to be a Mexican Folk Saint (Saint Death) who is based on / has evolved from ‘Mictēcacihuātl’ an Aztec deity who was believed to be queen of the underworld. This is all very interesting but something you could probably read anywhere. The real question is Why do I work with her?
Well most of the time I tend to evoke, wield and control the pure energy of a magical undercurrent myself, and so when I use Saturnian energy for Necromantic or Death workings, I would pull in that relevant energy. For me this tends to come to me as a very very deep black river. I tend not to rely on evoking or invoking specific spirits, but I know that all energies in the universe can be broken down into elements much like science breaks them down into the Periodic Table. We won't go into that now but I'm sure you all know what I'm getting at, anyway rather than trying to assign a spirit, God, Goddess or something to these energy currents I tend to see what form it naturally wants to take.
When I deal with Saturn I tend to get Kronos, but when I want to break the Saturnian current down further it tends to show itself in the form of Santa Muerte. The first time she showed herself to me was when I was shall we say paddling in the death current river lol. I was there on the Astral and a figure arose from the middle. It was Santa Muerte and she said to me ‘I am Santa Muerte and I am Death.’
As usual I took on board what she said and filed it away in my mind for later use. The problem was that I clearly didn’t get what she was trying to say to me. I basically thanked her, but didn't act on the information and so for the next few weeks, most nights and even many times during the day I would see her pop up usually out of some dark puddle, river, lake or sea and say
‘I am Santa Muerte and I am Dead.’
It took me a while to get what she was trying to say and it actually took other spirits I work with also essentially saying the same thing and that was that Santa Muerte IS DEATH, meaning that the personification and picture what the death current wants to use to appear to me in the guise of is Santa Muerte and so if that's what the death current itself wants to use as an icon then that actually means that a far as i’m concerned Santa Muerte is no standard random death deity she is in fact the Death currents chosen vessel / image.
I have worked with the death current through Santa Muerte alot over the years and given that I have a natural disposition towards that specific planet / sephiroth / current I have been given a number of gifts, positions and dare I say it toys to use from her lol.
The thing that I have noticed about this specific spirit is that she is a natural evolution of the death current. It has decided to manifest itself as the imagine of Santa Muerte for many people around the world, especially Westerners in the 21st Century probably because these days we often lack a strong culture and identify, In The West we have so many people on so many different paths that we no longer really gravitate towards certain pantheons of spirits. The West is composed of so many different people from different races, creeds, religions and cultures and yet the one thing that we all seem to be drawn to at least when it comes to death is the image on the Grim Reaper.
Santa Muerte is essentially a Grim Reapress, a female death deity that is not just another deity but an image or costume that the death current seems to be using, because it taps into the deep recesses of the modern 21st Century person's collective unconscious. Ultimately Santa Muerte is Death personified. She is not a figure to be taken lightly and is definitely here to stay. She is capable of reaping and ending anything that has a beginning and so could be a powerful ally. No one and nothing can cheat death, many think they can, but she always gets them in the end.
One of the things to remember though is that death knows it can take you at any time and so is in no rush to. Death can take its time, to Santa Muerte you could live 1 year or 1Million years, but it means nothing to her. She can and has got the answers to what many people seek. The power of extending your lifetime in unusual ways thought to be impossible can be done with her help but only with her blessing.
Santa Muerte or death doesn't care about ethics or morality as it’s below her. She often will not be the one standing in your way of causing great change in the universe simply, because she doesn't care about it. This tiny little universe and everything in it ultimately means nothing to her and unlike many minor local spirits dependent upon the status quo to maintain their influence and power (and sometimes even existence), Santa Muerte doesn’t care much about what happens here . That not only means she can be bargained with, but also means she is happy to help you reshape reality itself, after all what does it matter to her lol.
This might not make sense to many, but at least it’s a little different to the usual copy and paste crap about how people work with her by hiding her in the cupboard and about dressing her up in different colours (I don’t use the colours) and what offerings she likes etc.
